Según cuenta la historia, sobre las Torrijas de Ciudad Real, hace siglos, más en concreto, el siglo I d.c., el gastrónomo Romano Marcus Gavius, las menciono en uno de sus recetarios. Ya en la Edad Media fue cuando las deliciosas torrijas se extendieron por toda Europa y se adoptaron como dulce típico de Semana Santa. Si bien es verdad que hoy en día hay miles de versiones más modernas de este preciado dulce, siempre se las ha asociado al pan duro y a la escasez económica, ya que, antiguamente, era la manera de comer algo dulce y a la vez, aprovechar los restos de pan de días anteriores.
